Athens, PA (WBNG Binghamton) More than 35 teams met up at Area Athens High School to battle it out, but this competition wasn't a physical one.
The Twin Tiers Science Olympiad Invitational draws in some of the top science teams in the country.
"We have the number one team in the nation here which is from Solon, Ohio, and we also have three of the top teams in Pennsylvania here, which is absolutely amazing to have such high caliber teams coming to little old Athens, Pennsylvania," said Twin Tiers Science Olympiad Coordinator Carli Yeager-Hall.
There are three different areas of competition, including paper tests, lab competitions and building events.
Each team has 15 members and must compete in all 23 events.
"When you are competing against the best it can only make you better. The students have to prepare more, they see where they rank against the top rank teams and they know what they need to do to become one of those top rank teams," Yeager-Hall said.
Students say they love being hands-on with activities, and competing against other teams.
"Building events are definitely really popular because you know it's hands on activity you get involved with everything, but the study events are also good and popular because it's not as intense, but they're also really fun," said Sarah Slocum, a junior at Athens Area High School.
One of the events can only be found at the Twin Tiers Invitational.
The "Geek Speak" event is based on science fiction trivia and was created by the team at Athens Area High School.
