Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Being away from home on the holidays can be lonely, especially when you are very far away.

To help make sure soldiers don't get homesick this holiday season, local veterans spent Monday afternoon packing packages.

More than 50 pounds of goodies will go to four service members from Vestal. Three packages will go to Afghanistan and the fourth will go to an aircraft carrier that is on its way to the Philippines.

The gifts include decorations like mini Christmas trees, fake snow and lights. Plus, they're packed with lots of goodies like peanut butter and candy canes.

"Matter of fact, we even have a summer sausage to send them," Chuck Yoko, a member of Vestal Veterans Elks Veterans Committee, said. "Those are special things they'll never get a chance to get. So they're getting a real treat this month."

Some of the dry goods were donated by Solid Gold Jewelry.

Yoko said the best part of the process is letting the soldiers know someone is thinking about them this holiday season.
