Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Over 100 people enjoyed spiedies and entertainment Monday night, but instead of traveling to Otsiningo Park, the festival was brought to them.
For 21 years, the Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center has held their own Speidie Fest, catering to residents who are unable to make it to the festival weekend at the park.
According to organizers, the event helps to bring excitement and tradition to the August calendar for seniors and their families.
"It was too hard for them to get there with handicaps and wheelchairs. We've had three generations that are here tonight and you know, they forget their aches and pains for a little while and just have smiles on their faces and have a good time," said Denise Johnson, administrator of the Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
The parking lot of Willow Point was filled with live music, dancing and -- of course -- spiedies.
A hot air balloon launch kicked off the celebration as residents and their families looked on as they enjoyed ice cream cones.
"This is a real community event because we have Willow Point people here as well as Vestal people. We're real happy that we can kind of share the wealth with more people," Johnson said.
Since the Vestal facility flooded in 2011, the nursing center has been renting space at Willow Point. Plans for a new home for the Vestal patients are in the works, with groundbreaking expected this fall.
