Ithaca, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Ithaca's Police Department is overwhelmed by a recent spike in burglaries around the city.

Police said they are actively investigating more than 20 burglary cases, mostly at commercial businesses.

"These numbers that we've seen are something we're just not used to and it certainly has our attention," said Jamie Williamson, public information officer, Ithaca Police Department.

On Monday morning alone, police responded to three businesses being burglarized: John's Convenience Store, a Subway Sandwich Shop, and Purity Ice Cream.

Police were able to apprehend a suspect in the incident at John's Convenience Store.

"They located the suspect in the area that was hiding in the bushes, it was great police work," Williamson added.

Police are still looking for the suspect(s) in the other two incidents.

Police said they have increased their efforts to stop and prevent these burglaries, adding more plain-clothed and uniformed officers to the area.

The suspect in the John's Convenience Store case, is 23-year-old John Dobbs.

"We knew him, he comes here two-three times a day," said John Tadros, Owner of John's Convenience Store.

Dobbs has been charged with Attempted Burglary and Criminal Mischief.
