(WBNG Binghamton) The fourth of July is an exciting time to spend outdoors with friends and family, and also the most popular time of year for fireworks.

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York remind residents the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional display. If you attend one, the association says respect the barriers set up around the site and resist temptation to get close to the launching site.

The association also said it's a good idea to leave pets at home since loud noises can damage hearing.

Most importantly, officials say leave fireworks to professionals. Shooting fireworks on your own is dangerous and, in New York, is illegal.
