Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A group of Student Council members at Glenwood Elementary school show their classmates what it takes to make a difference.
10 student council members started a coin drive in hopes of raising money to give to victims of Hurricane Sandy.
They held planning meetings, created posters and wrote morning announcements to engage the entire school.
"The class that brought in the most money, they would win a pizza party," said Natalie Godoy of Vestal.
Students collected more than $1,000 in just one week.
"All donations are very very meaningful and this one especially given that it came from the kids, and they have done such a wonderful job and so much work and so much planning," said Donna Hill of the American Red Cross.
Coin jars were placed in each classroom to collect donations.
"It shows that the kids really care that they've been number one watching the news, that they really understand what the need is right now especially in New York and New Jersey," said Hill.
