Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A reading project turns into a fifth grade class donating thousands of dollars to the Red Cross for Superstorm Sandy relief.
$2,450 was presented to the American Red Cross from Sue Johnson's fifth-grade class at Chenango Forks Elementary from their "Read for Sandy" program.
Fifth grader Sydney Young came up with the idea.
"I was watching the news with my mom one night and it was really sad to see what they were going through so I really wanted to help them," she said.
With the help of two classmates, Young brought the idea to her class and all students participated.
The week before Thanksgiving, students went out and got donations and pledges on how many pages they could read over the Thanksgiving holiday.
In total, they read nearly 10,000 pages. This smashed their original goal of 7,500 pages.
"It's just amazing that they raised nearly $2,500 for the Red Cross so we can continue our service down there," said Shelley Bierwiler, American Red Cross, Southern Tier chapter.
Bierwiler says the Red Cross will use the money to provide immediate needs to those affected by Sandy which includes shelter, food and water.
