Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Several fire departments responded to a three-alarm fire at an apartment building in Johnson City early Wednesday morning.

Three people were taken to the hospital, two residents and a firefighter, according to the Johnson City Fire Department.

Around 3:10 a.m., firefighters responded to the Floral Apartments at 85 Floral Avenue.

"Upon arrival, there was multiple residents hanging from the windows," said Johnson City Fire Captain Keith McCaffery. "All residents that were in the windows were removed by ladder."

Victor Lay lives in the building and said he was asleep with his girlfriend on the second floor when the fire started.

"There was a wall of dark gray smoke," said Lay.

Neighbors were knocking on his door to get him out, but he said he didn't hear it.

"We didn't hear any smoke detectors either," said Lay.

What he did hear was one of his neighbors yelling his name. He then grabbed a few belongings and jumped from the window.

Lay and his girlfriend were caught below by neighbors, fire fighters and police officers.

Representatives from the Red Cross were on the scene assisting displaced residents.

Fire departments from Vestal, Endicott, Endwell and Prospect Terrace also responded in mutual aid.

A portion of Floral Avenue was blocked to traffic early Wednesday while crews responded to the fire.
