Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The teenage girl who was found dead in a Vestal home Thursday was choked to death, and police believe her boyfriend is responsible.

The call came in just after 4:30 a.m. Thursday, when Shelby Jenkins, 16, was found unresponsive.

She was taken to Wilson Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to Dr. James Terzian, who performed the autopsy earlier Thursday, Jenkins was choked to death.

The official ruling is asphyxiation by manual strangulation.

Her death is being ruled a homicide.

Steven Lipka, 19, is in custody, and he is being charged with second degree murder.

Friends of Jenkins confirm that he was her boyfriend.

Jenkins attended Vestal High School during her Freshman year, then transferred to the Evertech Program through BOCES.

Investigators spent most of the day on the scene at the home along the corner of Owego and Westland roads.

Westland was blocked off with crime scene tape until after 7:30 p.m.

New York State Police joined the investigation along with Endicott Police and Broome County Sheriffs.

Police were thorough in this investigation. They focused most of their investigation collecting plenty of evidence in the basement and a shed located on the property.
