Veterans receive grant for memorial costs

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Local veterans get a boost to help with expenses.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston announced today the Veterans Memorial Association will receive a $5,000 grant.

The extra funding will be spent on maintaining uniforms and rifles used during memorial services.

Veterans attend hundreds of funerals a year, and the cost of maintaining uniforms and riffles has traditionally fallen upon the them.

Many of the riffles used date back to the World War II era, and are prone to breaking.

"In a tough economy and with limited funds, it's increasingly difficult and not fair to expect this important organization to come up with these funds on their own," Preston said.

Veterans wishing to join the Broome County Veterans Memorial Association can call the Broome County Veterans Service Agency at (607) 778 2147 for more information.
