Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Vestal native stopped by Meals on Wheels of Western Broome on his trip across the United States -- on foot.

Phil Cihiwsky is walking to raise awareness and money for Meals on Wheels chapters.

Cihiwsky, born and raised in Vestal, started his journey on March 4 and is nearing the end.

The more than 3,200-mile trip has taken him through 12 states with three more states left.

"The inspiration is two fold, one is the desire to actually do something like walk across the country. And the other inspiration is the needs of programs like Meals on Wheels," Cihiwsky said. "Everyone who is a person hopes that some day they will grow old. And as we grow older the likelihood that we will need services and programs like meals on wheels will increase."

Cihiwsky's final destination is York Harbor, Maine, and hopes to be there by Oct. 4.
