Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) It might have been a bit rainy and muggy Thursday, but it did not stop thousands of people from getting some ice cream.

The West Corners Fire Department held their annual Ice Cream Social during a perfectly timed break in the weather. This year they celebrated 96 years of service to the community.

A huge bowl of ice cream was only $1, with classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.

The West Corners Fire department all volunteer, and serve a population of more than 5,000 people.

"It's important that we support them since they're here volunteering their time," said David Jensen, as he enjoyed his ice cream, "Spending time away from their family, away from their work to do a job that I think is under appreciated."

Darlene Leonard, the president of West Corners Auxilary, said they appreciate the support they see from the community.

"We are just so surprised with the people that communicate with us and support us along the way. That's what it's all about, to run a community it takes everybody to work together."

This ice cream social is the department's biggest fundraiser of the year.
