The "Tightrope" Storm of 2008

A decent winter storm hit us on the 11th and 12th of December. Precipitation type was the hardest part of the forecast, and we saw all forms. Snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain fell across the Twin Tiers. The Stormtracker Weather Team’s forecast was fairly close to reality (I was about 15-20 miles too far east with some snow totals), although we did have to massage the numbers a bit as the storm progressed. This was due in large part to the temperature profile of the atmosphere, and the timing of the changeover back to frozen precipitation. When we’re dealing with these mixed events all we can hope for is to be close to reality (of course we’ll continue to strive for perfection), as any slight change in the atmosphere can make a difference of precipitation type. Below is a compilation of how much of what fell where, special thanks to the Binghamton National Weather Service.
