The first Tropical Depression formed today off the East Coast. Fortunately it is not expected to strengthen significantly and is forecast to remain well out to sea. If it were to become a Tropical Storm, the name would be Ana. Here is a list of this year’s names.
Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to avoid confusion as to which storm is where in the Atlantic basin. Names are maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization. Six lists are used in a rotation, so this years names won’t be used again until 2015. If a storm is so deadly or costly, then the name is retired and a new name is selected to replace it on the list.
