Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to avoid confusion as to which storm is where in the Atlantic basin. Names are maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization. Six lists are used in a rotation, so this years names won’t be used again until 2015. If a storm is so deadly or costly, then the name is retired and a new name is selected to replace it on the list.
