The topic... Tornadoes. They are pretty rare around these parts, but they can and have occurred here.

So what is a tornado exactly? A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with the ground. Now the key phrase here is "contact with the ground". If it is not in contact with the ground it is called a funnel cloud. Wind speeds in a tornado range from 60mph to over 200mph, and can travel up to 70mph. The average speed of a tornado is generally around 20mph.

Tornado Safety...

Know your safe place. It could be a basement, bathroom, or inner hallway. If your bathroom has a window in it, it is not the safest place as it is close to the outside of your home.

If you live in a mobile home, leave it. First choice, seek shelter at a neighbor's house. Second choice, find a ditch or low lying area and lie flat on the ground.

Stay away from windows. High winds could cause debris to become airborne, which could injure you.

Watch WBNG. We'll keep you abreast of the situation and provide you with information you need.
