Air Quality Index Forecast....What is it?

May 19, 2011 Updated May 19, 2011 at 7:11 AM EDT

As a professional meteorologist, one of my goals is to provide the public with important weather and other environmental information that may not normally be included in a weather broadcast. To achieve this goal, I have been showing an Air Quality Index graphic that can be seen daily on Action News This Morning. What does this mean?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issues an Air Quality Index forecast daily and the goal is to inform people of the quality of air that can be expected in an area. People affected by this include: those with lung disease, the elderly and the very young. For more information, check out the link I have included. All you need to do is type in your zip code at the top of the page and a forecast will be generated for you! I have included a snapshot of what the graphic looks like. This may not be representative of the forecast for today.
