First off before I tell my story I just want to say for those who think long distance relationships don’t work, Milton and I have been together for 6.5 years and 3/4 of that was going to separate colleges, so if you are truly committed to one another it can happen.
Milton proposed on New Years Eve. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I assisted in the engagement process. I decided to plan a 2010 NYE party at my house. We had my friends and family, his friends and family, college friends, high school friends, everyone! At the stroke of midnight we had about 60 people filling my house and as the clock hit 12:00 am everyone had their midnight kiss. After midnight, Milton was unsure of when the right time to propose was so my mom took the initiative and announced in front of everyone that Milton was giving the 2011 new years toast. As Milton and I stood in the middle of my crowded house, he started out addressing everyone then he turned and faced me. Looking into my eyes, Milton began telling me how I was his best-friend and his soul mate and honestly, as he was talking I did not hear anyone or anything! Once he addressed the toast to me, at that moment it was only me and him. When I realized what was happening, my thoughts just went blank. Milton and I had been looking at rings for a while but never did I think he would propose on NYE. I was not expecting it at all so after he gave the toast to me, he got down on one knee and said “you are my always, now will you be my forever?”. The whole time that Milton was addressing me, our lives and future kept running through my head. I began crying with happiness and I was so shocked that I couldn't even verbalize "yes", I had to shake my head. From there, the whole crowd erupted with excitement and tears! As Milton and I stood in the middle of all our friends and family, we kissed, hugged, and just stood there holding each other.
Looking back on that entire night, I am stunned that I didn’t notice how nervous Milton was, how obvious people were that it was happening, and how *everyone* knew it was happening except for me. What impressed me the most is hot slick Milton was with the ring. The day before went to the jewelery store to look for a Christmas present “for Milton’s mom” and as we were looking, the sales assistant offered to clean my ring which is when I got sized because I had a promise ring on my finger, I also didn’t realize that the ring we looked at a couple of days ago was gone from the shelf. I am grateful that my sister videotaped this special moment and we can now cherish it for the rest of our lives. The proposal could not have been any better for us as a couple because we are always surrounded by our family and friends and they are very important to both of us so for them to be there as it happened was extraordinary and I wouldn’t have changed it for anything.
