This week in Chenango County near the hamlet of McDonough the Department of Environmental Conservation lowered Balsam Pond, located in the Balsam Swamp State Forest, three feet. According to the N.Y.S. D.E.C., the public campground, boat launch and day use area at Balsam Pond will be upgraded to improve safety, protect water quality and provide accessibility for people with disabilities. A new regulation is proposed to restrict motors in excess of 25 horsepower from Balsam Pond.
Balsam Pond is a small pond, but it is a great fishing area for summer and winter with several species of fish. Due to tree stumps along shorelines (north-end and eastern) large mouth bass are provided with good cover.
