Take care on the carriage step, lady.

Take care on the carriage step, lady.

As my wife and I walk around Norwich, we occasionally come across a piece of history called a "carriage step". During the Victorian years of the late 1800's and early 1900's, the principal method of moving around the growing city was by horsedrawn carriage. It was difficult for the women, in their long skirts, to climb down from the carriages; so stone steps were placed at the curb for them to step down on. This particular one has seen better days, but stays on as a reminder of the best years of Norwich's history.
