Varna Volunteer Fire Company personnel with the mutual aid of Etna, Ithaca and Slaterville Springs Fire and NYS State Police were able to get a successful stop of a four bedroom apartment fire to the apartment of origin in the Varna hamlet yesterday at 1015 Dryden Rd. Fire damage was limited to the apt of origin, with water damage to apartment below. Two other apartments on the other side of a firewall had only minor smoke damage. The fire started around 5:38 PM and was the result of a cooking fire. The resident was unable to control the fire and left to call 911, as well as alert the neighbors. New York State Police reported fire spreading to wall at 5:43 PM and further assisted residents. All residents and their pets got out safely. At around 5:49 PM, Varna engines arrived and the initial knockdown was performed by Varna firefighters. Ithaca, Etna and Slaterville Springs firefighters also assisted with the interior strike, as well as setting up secondary hoses, connection to hydrants, ladders and fire police operations. Slaterville axillary assisted in rehabilitation as well as Slaterville providing an engine and manpower as back-up at the VVFC station. Dryden Ambulance transported one Etna firefighter who received a minor injury during clean-up operations. The American Red Cross came to the scene to assist the residents with temporary housing and other needs. In addition NYSEG was called to the scene to assist with the utilities.
