LISLE - After waiting patiently for a cross country skiing opportunity, on Saturday, January 14, several members of the Triple Cities Ski Club headed out to Greenwood Park for some snowy "kick and glide." It turned out to mostly kick with very little glide. Temps were in the upper teens and the snow was powder but there was no base with wet, unfrozen ground underneath. The skis became clogged with ice and snow very quickly and after scraping them off a couple times, the group shifted gears, stowed the skis and went for a wonderful hike in the new snow. No snowshoes necessary as the group hiked through the light powdery snow only a few inches deep. The same conditions that made skiing difficult, enhanced the traction and made hiking very easy. Until recently, the winter scenery has been sorely missed but on this day, these winter hikers had their appetite for a scene "covered with white" very well satisfied. We have a lot of catching up to do after our unusual start to winter.
Finally, a Winter Day!
