Fourteen high school students walked in the shadows of Dr. Mark P. Hatala and his orthodontic staff as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day, February 1st, 2012. Groundhog Job Shadow Day is an annual international effort to acquaint students with the world of work through on-the-job experiences. By observing their orthodontic mentors, the students experienced a typical day in an orthodontic practice. They discovered the wide range of rewarding career opportunities available in orthodontic practices.

Johnson City High School: Kristine Phimmasone, Tyler Dranichak, Dylan Palmiter;
Maine-Endwell High School: Emily Missavage, Meredith Suwak, Kayla Wilkinson;
Susquehanna Valley High School: Tianna Katusha, Emily Matthews;
Vestal High School: Sarevah Shafer, Jeremy Sansone, Vaishali Willis;
Windsor High School: Ashley Kamp, Richard Mathers, Caleb Larnerd;
Dr. Hatala and his staff shed some light on the workings of the practice – from orthodontic examinations and adjusting braces on patients to the use of x-ray machines and computer technology. Through their shadowing experience, the students were able to learn about the special skills and education required to become an orthodontist, hygienist, or lab technician.
