Civil War Pictorial Postmark cancellation stamps for Chenango County townships began with Mt Upton, town of Guilford on April 12th. The second took place in Guilford on the 24th. This being an historical first, as such a large group of Post Offices in New York State will participate in a united pictorial postmark. You can mail a self addressed stamp envelope to the PO to obtain the postmark and attend the PO but, the MT UPTON postmark can only be used with the Civil War stamps released prior to the "Forever" stamps to be released on April 24th 2012. However, you can use the "Forever" stamps in Guilford on the 24th and 30 days after. All post offices can postmark for 30 days when they are mailed in.
The challenge is for you to obtain all 20. They make great collectors items. You can also design your own "cache" as with the envelope posted or use just a plain business size #10 envelope. The reason is that the cancellation is pretty big and works better with the business size...you can use a regular size but it will not appear as neat.
Here is the Post Office Schedule so far for the cancellation stamps. Be sure to buy your forever stamps when they are released as they will go fast. There may be additions to this list so stay tuned:
