We enjoyed our recent visit to a few of the locks on the old Erie Canal and were quite surprised at what we found. The system of 83 locks, completed in 1825, had 18 aqueducts to carry the canal over ravines and rivers from Lake Erie to the Hudson River. Today rather than barges, recreational boats and fisherman use the canal and it's possible to take cruises on the canal.
