Adopted as our national bird in 1782, Bald eagles are large birds with wingspans of 6 to 7 1/2 inches and bodies of about 3 feet in length. Bald eagles can reach speeds of 30 to 35 miles per hour. In the wild, bald eagles may live as long as 30 years and they mate for life.
