We have had 3 different squirrels at bird feeder, at the same time, with all or part of their tails missing. One was open and raw. This one still had a little bit left. I have not seen any of them in the last 3+ weeks. When I saw the first one I thought maybe an owl or hawk had grabbed them but now I am wondering if it is some sort of disease.

Red squirrels have been known to bite off grey squirrel tails during fights.
