Old Forge, NY – A new Moose Mascot named “Safari Sam” made his Adirondack red-carpet debut on Sunday, July 29 at Enchanted Forest Water Safari (http://www.watersafari.com) beginning with a special unveiling event and press conference at 11:00 am. Safari Sam first came to life in 2011 as part of a contest to create a new mascot. Park Vice President and Director of Marketing Katie Wojdyla explains, “We’ve wanted to create a new park mascot for several years. In 2011, Nick Accordino, a summer marketing intern, came up with the outstanding idea for a mascot contest. We started promoting it throughout the summer and collected entries from our guests.”
The park received numerous entries, many of which included other Adirondacks favorites such as bears, otters, and a variety of birds. Fan feedback from the Enchanted Forest Water Safari Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/WaterSafari) helped the park select The Thayer Family of Boonville, NY as the winners with their concept of a safari themed moose named Safari Sam. The Thayer Family received a grand prize package including: Season Passes and tickets to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, a two night stay at Old Forge Camping Resort (http://www.oldforgecamping.com), a reserved parking spot, lounge chairs, a locker and early entrance into the park, a Family Fun Deal from Calypso’s Cove (http://www.calypsoscove.com) and a $50 Splash Cash gift card to use at the park. The Thayer Family was on hand Sunday, July 29 to celebrate the debut of Safari Sam.
Enchanted Forest Water Safari worked with Foster Martin Agency of New Hartford, NY to bring Safari Sam to life. The digital image of Safari Sam will appear throughout the park and in upcoming marketing and promotional materials. Working with Scollon Productions, Inc. of South Carolina, a life-size mascot was created to allow guests to interact with Safari Sam, adding a new and exciting dimension to their park experience. “It was an amazing process,” stated Wojdyla, “starting with the Thayer’s original drawing and seeing the evolution of the character. I am sure he will bring smiles and memories to families who visit the park for years to come.”
Safari Sam is already making his mark at Enchanted Forest Water Safari. A new food stand, Safari Sam’s Snack Shack, opened this summer serving the park’s famous freshly made mini donuts (“A favorite of Safari Sam’s,” Wojdyla adds) along with cotton candy, Good Humor Ice Cream, and an assorted array of chips and snacks. Safari Sam will appear at the park and other local events throughout the season, posing for pictures with families and making young kids smile. But Park President Tim Noonan reminds us that Safari Sam “gets days off just like everyone else.”
Enchanted Forest Water Safari holds special character appearances during the summer in which Safari Sam will join other fan favorites such as Scooby Doo on Friday, August 10th. Guests will have the opportunity for a true safari experience and get to meet Safari Sam during the exclusive character breakfasts. Tickets for character breakfasts can be purchased online at http://www.watersafari.com/news/index.cfm?fn=Character_Breakfast.
