Guilford Fun Fest 2012 Celebrating Our Heritage on August 18 9:00-3:00
Now known as the Guilford Community FunFest, it is hoped that this year is bigger and better than ever before. This year we are celebrating our heritage. That takes into account each of the churches, the Klee house, the Fire Dept. the Historical Society and J’s Quickway. They are what makes our community a special place to live. We need to support them so we keep our community alive and well by our involvement and participation.
You won’t believe all that is in store for you on August 18th from 9:00 in the morning all the way through until 10:00 pm. Yes that’s right! 10:00 at night. However, most of the activities take place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Included in that time frame are, the Crafters and Vendors lining Main St. and the Methodist Church. Get your Christmas shopping done early with wonderful hand crafted items including jewelry, wood crafts and Indian crafted items and much more. Along the same line at the Methodist Church the Church Ladies have organized a White Elephant sale, basket extravaganza and homemade candy sale. There will also be a quilt show there. So, bring your hand crafted quilts or antique quilt and description and/or history thereof and be eligible for a prize for the most favorite quilt.
It’s not without saying, that the Guilford Garage/Lawn sales play an important part in the usual community day events and this year is the same. So be prepared to wander the streets and the side streets of Guilford. Anyone who needs a table having a sale contact Elaine Pikul at (607) 895-6325. As you wander and browse listen to the music of Gary Jennings, International Singer who will be located across from the Methodist Church.
A cancellation stamp has been designed for the day. Take your letters and cards to the Guilford Post Office window to receive the special Community Day Fun-Fest cancellation stamp featuring a Tractor with farm scene. Hours are 8:00-12:00. The Guilford Carry-On 4-H Club will be selling Popcorn, snow cones and Taco’s in a Bag at the Post office. In the PO parking lot will be a school bus. This is the “STUFF A BUS”. Needed to stuff that bus are new items paper, pencils, pens, notebooks and any item that you may think a child needs to start school. Cash is appreciated as well.
Look for the Guilford Historical Society tent as the society has great display of Guilford’s part in the Civil War, Guilford Homes, Businesses and Farming. The farming display is intended as a salute to the farmers of yesterday and today with photos depicting some of the old and new farming technologies. It is an on-going project for GHS and we are still in the process of collecting farming and house photos. If you have any old and/or new photos, please bring to the tent for us to scan. The GHS will also be selling NEW Guilford Crocks with each of the hamlets names on them and new and revised Guilford history books, collectible pairpoints and the Farm/Recipe calendar for 2013.
There will also be raffles during the day. A 50-50 raffle will be held. The tickets will be available at the Guilford Historical tent and the Methodist Church. At the Klee House, check out the novelty table with many unique (antique and new) items for sale to support the Klee House.
We do not want to leave out the animals as the Delaware SPCA will be bringing a couple of animals up for adoption. The SPCA can use donations of rugs, blankets, towels, pet food and pet toys and of course, cash is always appreciated. Along that same theme you can bring your favorite pet to the Methodist Church at noon for a special “Pet Blessing” by Rev. Peggy Eller.
During all the activities you may feel hunger pains. Stop in at the Guilford Firehouse for their famous BBQ Chicken and the Methodist Church for your salads and baked beans. If you prefer hot dogs, hamburgers or sausage, those too are available at the Methodist Church. The Vigas family will also be selling BBQ at the corner of Furnace Hill and Main St.
Now last but not least, is the reason for the 10:00 pm or later close of the day’s events. For a donation of a non-perishable food item as admission, box or canned goods or cash, you may enter the Methodist Church at 7:00 pm and attend a dance. The rock ‘n roll country dance will be emceed by our very own Guilford DJ, none other than Scott Parsons. He even throws in a few of those big band numbers that many of us still remember. From 7:00 to 10:00 you can dance the night away to all your old favorite tunes and feel your youth come back, at least for awhile, and know you had the best time at the Guilford Fun-Fest and who knows, you may take home a prize or two besides all the goodies you bought.
