Guilford Historical Society's New book

Guilford Historical Society New Book

The new book Resting at Godfrey Corners, the fifth book in the series on the Cemeteries of Guilford, is now available. After six months of research, the history of the settlement of Godfrey Corners comes alive through those buried in Godfrey Cemetery. Members of the Guilford Historical Society recorded the gravestones in the fall of 2007 and from this, a database was produced. Analysis of this plus studying deeds, wills and family histories brought out a new view of this area of the Town of Guilford between Guilford Center and Mt Upton.
The journey begins with the early settlers such as the Boyes and Phillips families and moves on to the Godfrey, Odell, and other families, linking their efforts to form a new community out of the wilderness. The formation of the cemetery and school gives us an idea of what it was like to live in a small settlement in the early 1800’s. Included in the book are rare photos of the early time periods and family photos of the residents. The database, cemetery map and area maps are included at the end of the book. We feel this research is new information about the town of Guilford that has not been previously recorded. You will find this history a fascinating journey into the past.
Limited copies are available at J’s Quickway in Guilford, Made in Chenango, GHS meetings and by mail calling 607-895-6532 or 607-895-6131.
