Guilford Fire Dept. Memorial Day Parade

The Annual Memorial Day parade and services made possible by the Guilford Fire Dept. will be held on Main St. in Guilford on May 26, 2008 at 8:30 AM. The line up will begin at 8:00 at the school garage. The Bainbridge-Guilford band will be marching and performing. Also in the parade will be the American Legion, the Guilford Fire Dept., the Bainbridge Fire Dept, the Guilford 4-H Club, the Guilford Girl Scouts and many of our military veterans from all branches of service. Following the parade will be a memorial service and speech by the Honorable Clifford Crouch, New York State Assemblyman. The Guilford Citizen of the Year award will also be presented by the Guilford Historical Society.

This year we will be honoring the deceased Navy pilot Lt. Floyd G. Nelson plus all our veterans of the military service living and deceased. Veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq wars will participate plus others who are or were in the military service during peace time. There will be floats or other transportation provided for those who prefer not to march.

Following the parade and services, all are welcome back to the Guilford United Methodist Church for a complimentary continental breakfast where you can meet and talk with our veterans. A special presentation by Millie McKee, sister of Lt. Floyd Nelson will be given. The Veterans Committee of the Guilford Historical Society will have displays and listings of Guilford’s veterans to view. Veterans are asked to bring stories and any photos they may have that we may scan and add to our Military Archives of the Historical Society.

We welcome you to join us on May 26th at 8:30 AM for this special tribute to our veterans.

While I couldn't be in Guilford on Monday, I talked with my mother, Millie McKie about the events of the day. She was so pleased and honored with the entire day. THanks for remembering out Veterans (I am married to a retired Marine).

I was a Navy pilot in VP-50 at the same time Floyd(Sam) Nelson was in the squadron. His plane carshed on the Island of Cheju-do South Korea on April 9, 1959. Sam was killed along with 9 other pilots and crew. I would love to hear from his sister

Arturo, Millie was so excited and pleased to hear from you as were Tom and I. Our historical society heard the news at our dinner last night. Tom told them during his slide show presentation about the memorial. Thank you so much!

I am so happy that we did this in remembrence of my neighbor. He was a fine young man and deserving of the honor we bestowed on him. His sister Millie was thrilled. He will never be forgotten now because the Guilford Historical Society has saved it

I just want to thank the town of Guilford and all the people who put this together in honor of my Father this past Memorial Day. Although it was bittersweet, it was an honor for my Father and thank you for remembering. Susan(Floyd Nelson's daugter)
