Occasionally we see a piliated woodpecker on our old dead cherry tree. Whenever this occurs its always a thrill. November of '07, shortly after my birthday we looked out the kitchen window and were given a rare treat, 2 beautiful birds working feverishly for their meal. To the uninformed, these birds are approximately 15 inches long and can really put holes in dead trees. I took pictures for 9 minutes, see the size of the hole the one bird made in that time!

they dont 'work feavershly,' they "peck" very slowly due to their large size in,ellington,ct.
