Tree Struck By Lightening @ Hazel and Main in Vestal

Itty Bitty Storm Takes Out Big Old Tree

Just a few years ago, during a storm, a tree went down on the high voltage lines just across from our house - taking out at least 1 electric appliance on every circuit. This makes all thunder storms a bit more tense than they used to be.

So when the storm rolled through last night - even though it was only a glancing blow, we were very watchful. And then, it happened.
Kazow! Flash and then bang! At least this time they weren't at exactly the same time. Lights flickered - crap! But no green sparks! Yay!

The lights stayed on and life was good. Then the scanner squawked, saying a tree went down at Hazel and Main - just down from our house! Off I trotted with my camera to see if it was anything "good". It was. Live wires were down, police and fire department were there. NYSEG had just arrived.

No house was hit, but a grand old tree had been split into about 4 pieces. Only 1 was left standing. Sad. 2 were across the lines, 1 was across the road, 1 was in the owner's yard.

I stood around and chatted with the police officer until he had to leave for some reason. Then, as I was framing another picture, I noticed the fire fighters backing up. Ooo - that means something. I decided to as well.

It was about 30 seconds after that a big 'zot' happened on the ground and belched out ozone and a very disgusting mushroom of smoke.

I think they didn't have Main St open until about 415 AM. It was big tree. But - never lost power! Life is good.
