My Mom knows how to have a good time and truly understands the value of hard work; the old saying “work hard, play hard” comes to mind when I think of my Mother. She was the driving force behind my educational successes and taught me the value of putting in hard work now as it will pay off tenfold later. Not only did this mentality apply to my education but to the way we lived our lives; and this was certainly true in the garden as well. I remember as a small child picking rocks and planting vegetables in our small garden and enjoying the flowers around our shed behind our house. Some of my earliest memories are of my Mother and I out in the garden, sweating in the sun to make our little corner of the world just that much brighter. As I grew up our gardens expanded and we tried new flowers, pants, and vegetables and my love of gardening grew. Now that I have a place to call my own my Mother has been helping me create my own flower beds and gardens around my new home and some of those first memories come back to me… of just me and my Mother out in the garden, digging up earth, putting in the time and the back breaking work of starting a new garden and discovering plants to put in them, deciding what we should plant and where it should be placed for the greatest success and aesthetic appeal. I believe, for my Mother, gardening is an excuse to get outside and be in the sun, breath in the fresh air, enjoy nature and to create beauty around her; much as it is for me.
