Around 8:45am yesterday (Wed)in Port Dickinson, when the car ahead of me at the intersection of Newel and Chenango streets wouldn't proceed through the intersection I became annoyed and honked my horn. I saw the driver looking to his left, but not moving. Wondering what in the world was so interesting that he was oblivious to the traffic behind him I also looked in that direction, just in time to see a black bear ambling across the street, and down Hastings, the dead end. (I did not capture these photos at the time. They were taken about 15 min later when I returned to the intersection.) Having only seen a black bear one other time, but closer, I would guess that it was a female about 250-300lbs. There were men around the garage where it had just passed, and just down the street, people walking their children and dogs. Of course I had to follow in slow cautious pursuit, to see where it went. On Hastings, it casually sauntered through the front yards of the homes there, then picked up a little more speed when it saw the white van in front of me, also following it. At a slow gallop, it went into the brush and trees. I was told there was nothing but a 'cliff' and the highway beyond that spot. No telling where it went after that. When I returned later, there was nothing 4 legged there on Hastings, but two cute little bunnies. I knew well, that if they were there, no bear was around.
