Apalachin Lions Club Sponsored the A-team for 25 Years
In September of 1983 the Apalachin Lions held their inaugural Special
Olympic training session with 6 coaches and one lone athlete. In June of
1984 they closed their first year, after training and competing in 6
different sports,with a picnic attended by a roster of now 8 athletes and their families.
Twenty Five years later the club's roster contains 53 athletes and a staff
of 10 coaches, and we still close every year with a family picnic as shown
in the above photo. Athletes, coaches, and family members compete in 3
legged races and water balloon tosses for trophies before sitting down to a
pot luck dinner.
The Apalacin Lion sponsored Special Olympic A-team draws from a large
geographic area and has athletes covering a wide spectrum of ages and skill
levels. Anyone with an interest in joining can call John or Gae Crosby at
