While many people mark the beginning of spring with flowers or baseball spring training, some mark the beginnning of spring by salamander sightings! Many salamanders, newts including the Eastern Red Spotted Newt and Dusky Salamander pictured, found near Oneonta, NY, are among the first. Soon other amphibians like Wood Frogs, Spotted Salamanders, Green Frogs, and Spring Peepers will grace surrounding areas. These creatures are an important part of the environment and are of global concern since many species are disappearing across the planet due to disease and habitat destruction.
