I am Khristopher Barreiro, a Binghamton High School Alumni Class of 2008. I found myself sitting in front of the television for hours in suspense, waiting to hear that this tragic situation had been resolved. I also spent hours calling my family members still in the area to make sure they were safe.
Being a student here a Buffalo State College has been a lot of fun, but it was somewhat aggravating seeing what was going on in my hometown and being so far from my family and friends. My girlfriend lives right on Front street and it was horrifying thinking there was a shooting a few hundred feet from her house.
By the time this day was coming to an end i was trying to find a way to first express my feelings on the violence that goes on in this world, that never seemed to "hit home", until of course it was home.
So i spent my solemn afternoon attempting to find a way to send my community and the victims my condolences in the best way possible. As an aspiring poet/songwriter I decided i would write a song and dedicate it to the people left victimized by this unfortunate tragedy.
So i wrote a song that i titled "Why Should I". This song raised the question that goes through the mind of many people who only see the violence in the world from TV, News Papers, and the Internet, and never first hand. Why Should I?
Why Should I help, fight or stand up for something that doesn't seem to effect me? And my answer is fairly simple, because i still can. Many of our ancestors had to fight, and work through blood, sweat, and tears to get half of the justice, freedom, and peace that many of my generation take for granted. People gave their lives, stood strong, died, and fell to give me what i have.
Sadly those who fell around the world, on American soil, and right here in Binghamton can no longer stand for themselves. So who will stand for them now? I know I will... and I hope you will to.
All the best to everyone victimized by this Tragic Massacre that took place at the ACA in Binghamton, New York. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and hopefully this kind gesture will fall on warm hearts.
