Skiers were treated to a wildlife show at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills on Sunday, April 5. Riding up the chairlift over a wooded area, the skiers could watch a bear and her two cubs exploring an area at the base of a cliff. The bears seemed to be oblivious to the skiers as the chairs quietly passed over them. The skiers were getting used to seeing the bears each time they would ride the lift. Usually they were just nosing around the leafy ground, not moving very far from where we left them the last time. One time the cubs climbed a tree and hung out there for a while.
The ski patrol did a good job of monitoring the bears' activities and closed trails as necessary to keep the skiers from getting too close.
The skiing and snowboarding was still good with only a few places that needed to be hiked over. It was a warm sunny day that both skiers and bears could enjoy.
