This was on the side of our barn a couple years ago. Never saw it before, haven't seen one since. Still don't know what it is. It has a very long "tail" that looks like a black line blending in the wood.

cool. I've been curious about it for a long time. I looked on the web to see but could not find any pics before. Now, knowing the name, I have found lots of info. Thanks for passing it on...

This appears to be an insect in the "ichneumon" group (ichneumon wasps or ichneumon flies). There are lots of members of this group, but you will often notice the large size and the long black "tail" that is actually an ovipositor (egg-laying tube).
