Guilford Historical Society Farm Project
by Wilma Felton-Gray
The Guilford Historical Society has undertaken a new project. Although the project is closely related to the house project begun a few years ago, it has now expanded to early farming photos. As farm after farm is disappearing along with the majestic barns of long ago, we felt it important to collect photos of those farms. Not only are we asking for photos of farming and farms, barns etc. of Guilford, we will also be asking for permission to photograph any farms still in existence. Farming was and still is holding by its thumbnails as the number one industry of our township, county and state. How long that rating endures is not known, but recording the history of this industry is important to understand all the aspects of who we are and where we came from and our townships development and now sadly the decline.
If one goes back in time, even a quarter century, one can recall many family farms, and businesses. Businesses such as the feed stores (Agway), farm equipment suppliers, creameries and milk plants (Bordens) that provided income to many farm families, farm laborers, and employees of those farm dependent business of our communities. There were photos of those industries taken during the, pardon the expression, hay-day. We need to collect those photos and archive them for future generations. If you have any of those photos, including the houses please contact us so that we can scan them. The photos will be returned to you. If we contact you for your permission to photograph your farm or what remains please understand the purpose of this project.
The GHS motto is "Nothing remains unless someone remembers it, records it, and preserves it." We will display the early and now photos collected at the Community Fun Fest August 22nd. Plans are also in the works to develop a farm calendar for 2010 on Guilford Farming using the early and new photos.
