just happen to see this moth on the back of my buddys pick up truck as we were standing there shhoting the breeze. i said "HOLY COW, LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT MOTH!!" The item it is sitting on is a commercial size roll of weed eater cord. we measuered the spool to me almost 8 inches across. so this moth is pretty big as you can see in the picture. . as we went to get the tape measure, he flew off. I never seen one so big!. picture taken in west oneonta ny.

We see these moths in Costa Rica and I had no idea they were here in NY.

Looks like a polyphemus moth. Their wings can get about 6 inches across as your photo shows!
