The fifth running of the Smithville Day 5K took place June 13, 2009 starting at 9:34 a.m. 132 runners competed in the race. The temperatures were in the low 70s with sunny skies. The top female finisher was Samantha Augeri with a time of 20:31. The top male finisher for three years in a row was Shaun Horan of Norwich, with a time of 16:58.

The annual race is sponsored by the Genegantslet Fire Company and The Town of Smithville. All proceeds benefit a building fund for a new fire station in Smithville Flats.
