Finch Hollow Nature Center

Finch Hollow Nature Center

A beautiful fall day in October and we wanted to do something different than the traditional "take the kids to the pumpkin farm and force them to pose for pictures".
We drove out to the Finch Hollow Nature Center in Johnson City & were pleasantly impressed with not only the quaint system of trails, but also the exhibits within the museum center itself. (And, of course, I forced them to pose for pictures!)
The trails showcased some vibrant autumn scenery while providing some "natural" exercise for my active toddlers. My girls noticed one of those wooley bear caterpillars inching his way along the trail - he was HUGE; a fat little guy. I think he was trying to tell us that he really wasn't fat, he was just "big-furred". I can't exactly remember the old wives tale about the size of the black/brown sections and how it correlates to the severity of the coming winter, but this guy only had black on his head and he was brown all the way down to his hind end. Does this mean that we are in for a never-ending winter? I don't know, but I think I'm ready to start hibernating now.
I was thrilled to see that the exhibits inside the museum were kid-friendly. I'm sure I'm not the only parent who is constantly saying "put that down", "look with your eyes", "don't touch", "get that out of your mouth", "Oh my God, here security comes to throw us out!". This is a place where kids CAN touch, they CAN explore, and, well, they can just be kids.
The trails are open daily during daylight hours and the museum hour vary. Check it out online
