Johnson City – The Goodwill Theatre will present Harry the Dirty Dog, a musical based on the 1956 book by Gene Zion, on Saturday, March 13 at 11am and 2pm at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage, as part of their family-oriented Story Time Theatre Series. The series is sponsored by Books with Senator Libous in partnership with Morrisville State College and Bates-Troy Quality Dry Cleaners.
The classic book tells the story of a lovable canine with an aversion to baths. Harry runs away from home and enjoys a pleasant, filth-filled day – but when he returns home, he is so covered in dirt that his family no longer recognizes him.
Harry the Dirty Dog was adapted for the stage by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre artistic director Greg Gunning, who wrote the lyrics. Composer and orchestrator Richard DeRosa created the original Broadway-style score.
“Harry’s appeal is remarkably broad,” says ArtsPower executive producer Gary Blackman. “The story is very playful and lighthearted, but parents know it’s more than just silliness. Harry makes some very interesting points about inner and outer identity, asking kids to think about which is more important.”
“We love presenting ArtsPower musical versions of favorite children’s books because they are professionally acted and beautifully sung as well as being clever with loads of energy,” says Goodwill Theatre Executive Director Naima Kradjian. “We schedule these one-hour shows at convenient times before and after lunch, so the family can enjoy the show and the rest of the day together. This is a great introduction to the magic of theatre. We are sure that dog lovers will like the show, too.”
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens, students, and children. Reservations are encouraged. Reservations and information on all shows are available by calling the Goodwill Theatre Inc. offices at (607) 772-2404, ext. 1.
