My friend "jimbone" took these pics in the Binghamton area today. He didn't alter the pics or use any special things to take them. He researched it on the internet and found out they are a Solar Halo or "Sun Dog". Can the meteorologist comment on this? What causes this? Thanks , Wen

Hi Wen. The rainbow, or more specifically, icebow, around the sun is sunlight bouncing off the ice crystals in the cirrus clouds. The ice crystals act like little prisms that bend the light into the colors that we see. Hope this helps! --Howard
