(WBNG) -- Senator Kristen Gillibrand announced Wednesday $1 billion in rural partnership program funding will be included in President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better Act.

The funding is meant to stimulate development and innovation in rural communities across the nation.

Gillibrand said the plan will help rural communities thrive after being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Too often, rural communities struggle to access federal grants and other public resources that could help them, simply because they don’t have the same economic development organizations, grant writers and lobbyists that larger communities do,” Senator Gillibrand said.

The plan allocates $873 million in development grants and $97 million in innovation grants focused on non-profit organizations and higher education.
