VESTAL (WBNG) -- Vestal senior Jaylin Hurley uses field hockey as a way to relax and escape the things happening off of the field.

“Everything just goes out of my head when I’m playing,” said Hurley. “I’m focused on field hockey.”

After her grandmother, Geanie was diagnosed with breast cancer the team decided to use that as motivation and dedicate this season to her.

“I wanted to show her that I’m playing for her and the whole team is playing for her,” said Hurley.

During the season, the Golden Bears raised $1,500 for the Traci’s Hope Charity which is a local charity that helps men and women financially who are battling breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is emotionally hard on the family,” said Hurley. “They shouldn’t have to worry financially about getting treatment or other things. I just wanted to be able to help people because I know the struggle they’re going through.”

“The nice part and the best part is she inspired,” said head coach Vickie Sax. “She inspired the other girls to pitch in and get on board.”

As she closes this chapter in her life, Hurley is heading to St. John Fisher College to continue her field hockey career. She plans to continue making an impact off the field as a nursing major.

“She wanted to be able to play at a school where she could compete and where she could also earn a degree where she could make a difference in life,” said Sax. “That’s what she’s doing.”
