TOWN OF CHENANGO (WBNG) -- For the Chenango Forks football program sophomore wide receiver Xavier Samson, or X-Man, has made an impact on everyone.

“He means the world to all of us,” said senior Tyler Hayes. “He brings a light to our day.”

In early October Samson was taken to Upstate Medical after dealing with sore ribs, difficulty breathing and a bad cough. He was diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax, a rare lung disease that is usually caused by injury to the chest and can lead to lasting damage to the lungs.

“We were devastated,” said senior Matthew Brewster. “We love X-man. We’re all brothers here. There’s just something about X-man I think we hold more.”

The team came together to gift Samson a signed jersey from his favorite football player Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

“He made almost every single one-handed catch,” said Samson.

“We knew his favorite football team was the Browns,” said Hayes. “We figured that he’s a wide receiver, OBJ is a wide receiver. It would be perfect.”

The Blue Devils presented the jersey to Samson after he was released from the hospital and was cleared to return to practice.

“It was a special moment,” said Brewster. “It was cool. I’ve never experienced something like that so for us to do that was really cool.”

“It’s more than just football it’s a brotherhood,” said Hayes. “To have a kid like X-man go down like that and bounce back the way he did, it was awesome.”
