(WBNG) -- State Senator Fred Akshar continues the fourth year of his district-wide “Akshar’s All-Stars” student recognition program by recognizing students at three Broome County schools.
Each year, Senator Akshar recognizes local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement among their peers.
Since starting the program, Akshar has recognized more than 80 students across school districts in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties.
For each student recognized as an All-Stars, Senator Akshar will present them with a t-shirt and a framed certificate.
On Wednesday, Seton Catholic Central High School students will be recognized and on Thursday students from Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Horace Mann Elementary will be recognized.
Seton Catholic Central High School Senior Student Anika Christensen was one of three students selected in this program.
“Anika really is just a rising star, she’s a bright star and she’s got a bright future ahead of her and as you heard she’s very successful academically and musically. But one thing that struck me is her service to our community and I think now more than ever that is critically important,” said Akshar.
“It’s very nice of them to select me I’m really thankful that they did, that was really nice. I’m a little embarrassed, I did not expect it, I didn’t even know this was a thing but I’m very happy and it was very encouraging,” said Christensen told 12News.
