OWEGO (WBNG) - The Skating Community for Opportunities in Recreation and Enrichment has purchased a 25 by 50-foot natural ice rink to be erected at Hickories Park in Owego for the 2021-2022 skating season.

SCORE is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing ice recreation and youth-oriented programming in the Western Broome County area.

SCORE is in partnership with the Town of Owego Parks Department and will be assembling the rink when it arrives.

However, they are looking for volunteers from the community to assist in the upkeep of this rink. A natural ice rink depends on the weather, so their goal is to inspire the community so that it eventually can become a refrigerated rink.

CMH Rink Builders of Endwell will be assisting in the installation.

SCORE President Jim Tofte told 12 News “It’s something that we’re depending on mother nature, we’re depending on the community to be good stewards to the facility so we can have it again in the coming years. And like I said it’s meant for people to get out and skate. Families, youth, no matter what your age.”

Hours, rules, and arrangements are being finalized.
